Gerald D. Burgess

Gerald Dale Burgess, 82, of Hop Bottom passed away Sunday January 12, 2025 at Regional Hospital in Scranton.

His wife is Melvina Freeman Burgess and they have been married for 62 years.
Born in Tunkhannock, he is the son of the late Louis and Verna Dymond Burgess. He graduated from Tunkhannock High School and was a self-employed truck driver for many years.

Gerald was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family. In his spare time he could always be found working on his truck and he liked to hunt, fish, and camp.

Gerald is also survived by four sons, Kenneth Burgess (Ronni), Jerry Burgess , Bob  Burgess (Tara), and Tim Burgess (Jill); twelve grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; a brother, Wayne Burgess (Marie); a sister, Gladys Anderson; a sister in law, Susan Burgess; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased four sisters, Eleanor, Esther, Marion, and Loretta; and a brother, Louis Jr.

A memorial service performed by Rev. John Whitehead will be held on Saturday February 1, 2025 at 12 Noon in the Nicholson United Methodist Church.

John R. Raub

John Richmond Raub, 92, of Kingsley passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Friday January 10, 2025.

His wife is Jane L. Wheeler Raub and they have been married for 71 years.

Born in Kingsley, he is the son of the late Sylvenus and Ruth Gumaer Raub and graduated from Harford High School.

John worked for 15 years at Mountain View High School and retired as an entomologist working for the government. He was a member of the Dwarf Rabbit Club and he created his own breed of dwarf rabbit. He was very crafty and always just kept busy. 

John was a special husband and father who loved his family dearly.

John is also survived by two daughters, Susan Raub and Candy Jean Statts; two sisters, Beverly Raker and Ann Lippolis; two brothers, Luis and Phil Raub; and his “adopted” son Charles Raub.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Diane Raub; and two brothers David and Boyd Raub.
​
Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in the Tower Cemetery, West Lenox.

Lynn Stephanie Zinsmeister

Lynn Stephanie Zinsmeister passed away peacefully on January 7, 2025. She was born on April 7, 1936, in The Bronx, New York, to Andrew Morgan Parker and Pearl (Green) Parker.


Lynn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hugh Robert Zinsmeister, with whom she shared 64 happy and wonderful years after marrying on November 28, 1953. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Lynn Helen Maurer; son-in-law, Thomas F. Maurer; granddaughter, Stephanie Romaine Maurer; and sister, Dale McMeekin. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was loved dearly by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 


She is survived by her grandson Andrew D. Maurer and his wife, Christine, and their six children: Jude, Alise, Eveline, Joseph, Annabel, and Thomas of Broad Run, VA; her grandson Daniel T. Maurer and his wife, Linde, and their daughters Isabelle and Emilia of Nicholson, PA. She is also survived by two nieces, two great-nieces, and two great-nephews.


Lynn was actively involved in numerous organizations throughout her life. She was a member of the Eastern Star and The Order of the White Shrine and served as a past Mother Advisor of The Order of Rainbow for Girls, holding the Grand Cross of Color in recognition of her service. She was a life member of the Good Sam Camping Club and a charter member of the Pennsylvania Keystone Travelers. As a founding and life member of the Lewistown Pistol Club, she served as secretary for several years. She was also a member of the Family Motor Coach Association and The Pine Creek Valley Roadrunners, where she served as secretary for a number of years.


Professionally, Lynn worked at Montgomery Ward in Lewistown for 14 years before joining Kish Bank, where she dedicated 24 years before retiring in 1998.


Lynn moved to Elan Gardens in South Abington Twp., PA in 2020, where she lived out the remainder of her life. She enjoyed many new friendships and received excellent care from the numerous staff members. She had quite the social calendar, and on any given day, she could be found reading, arranging flowers, attending special events, and playing her favorite game "Rummikub" with special friends. 


All arrangements will be private, however, memorial contributions in her name may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Rosemary Koshinki, 77, passed away Sunday January 5, 2025 at her home in Hop Bottom.

Rosemary was born on January 8, 1947, in Scranton, PA. She was the daughter of Halstead and Mary Giles Hanyon. She was a graduate of Mountain View School District.

Rosemary was a hard worker and worked many different jobs throughout her lifetime. She was the secretary and bookkeeper, until retirement, for her and her husband's businesses.

Rosemary loved to read, cook, play cards/games, travel, go to the beach and spend time in her beautiful flower gardens. Her greatest joy in life was making amazing memories with her family and friends at the many pool parties and vacations spent together.

She leaves behind her husband of 53 years, John Koshinski; daughter, Danielle Scott and husband Alex, of Kingsley, PA; daughter Michelle Cheatum, of Scranton, PA; grandchildren, Alexandra Scott Brozonis and husband Dalton, of Clifford Twp., PA; Collin Scott and Caden Scott, both of Kingsley, PA; great-grandsons, Finley and Eli Brozonis, of Clifford Twp, PA; a stepson, John Allen, of Hop Bottom, PA; and four half sisters, Holly Harrington and husband Mark, Nancy Woods-Krukowski and husband Kevin, Gindy Hanyon and Sunny Brunt.

She was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws, Louis and Marguerite Stoss, a brother Paul Hanyon, half sister, Tracy Fulls, a son Joshua James Koshinski, who died at birth, and her beloved grandson, Connor Scott.

She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday January 11, 2025, in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson, PA 18446. The family will receive visitors from 12-2 PM, with a service to be held immediately after.

Interment will be at a later date, at Maplewood Cemetery, Kingsley, PA., at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hop Bottom Hose Co. or the Montrose Minutemen.

Rosemary Pashchuk Phillips

​Rosemary Pashchuk Phillips passed away Saturday January 4, 2025 peacefully in her sleep at Geisinger CMC in Scranton.

Born April 14, 1954 she is the daughter of the late Agnes Morris Pashchuk and William Pashchuk.

Rosemary was an orthodox Christian. She graduated from Mountain View High School and shortly after from Keystone College.

Rosemary had a love for life. She enjoyed going out dancing, visiting the Philadelphia flower shows and local casinos.

Rosemary pursued a variety of professions in her life. She frequented the New York City commercial fashion shows to buy wedding dresses for her boutiques in Clarks Summit and Olyphant. In addition, she was employed at Weston in Archbald. Also, after her father’s passing, she ran the family’s dairy farm.

She loved animals and adored her poodle, Tiger Woods.

Rosemary is survived by her sister, Nancy Pashchuk Chuta and her husband, Father James Chuta; and numerous cousins.

Funeral services by Father James Chuta will be held at 12 Noon Friday January 10 in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson.

Family and friends may call from 10am until service time.

Interment will follow in the St. Michael’s Cemetery in Starkville.

Irvin C. Aten

Irvin Chester Aten, 81, of Nicholson passed away on December 24, 2024 at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton.

His wife is the former Anna M. Borove and they have been married for 58 years.

​Born in Factoryville, Irv is the son of the late Carl and Lillian Grannis Aten.

Irv graduated from Lackawanna Trail High School in 1961 and shortly after from Mansfield University. He spent two years teaching at Blue Ridge before enjoying a 31 year teaching career at Elk Lake.

Irv was a very active member of his community. Irv was a three time past master of the Nicholson Masonic Lodge #438 and also a member of Factoryville Lodge #341.  He was a coach for the Nicholson Little League and teener program for many years. He officiated high school basketball, baseball, and softball in district 12 for many years, including state championship baseball and softball games. He was a director of the famous Hotel Niver softball tournaments and a connoisseur of Christmas lights.  In his spare time, he also loved to golf and bowl. 

Irv was a loving husband, father, and friend. He enjoyed spending time with his children and watching their families grow.

Irv is also survived by two sons, Jamey (Ronnie) of Laceyville, PA and Jeremy (Erin) of Weaverville, NC; six grandchildren, Jael (Eddie), Joshua (Sara), Jourdan (Travis), Jaycen (Mitchell), Ada, and Nolan; four great grandchildren, Alex, Theo, Miles, and Cayden; two sisters, Elena McAndrew and Tina McGurl; and five brothers, Carl, Melvin, Russell, Ron, and Edward; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jocelyn; and two brothers, Richard and Gerald.

A viewing will be held on Sunday December 29 from 4-6pm in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson.

Funeral services performed by Rev. Steven Geske will be Monday December 30 at 11:00am with calling from 10:00am until service time in the Grace Lutheran Church, 351 Greenwood Street, Hop Bottom.

Interment will be held in the Nicholson Cemetery.

Mary Ann Sabuacak, 88, of Nicholson passed away Friday, December 13 at Abington Manor. 
Her husband, Nicholas, whom she married November 8, 1958 passed away in 2013.
Born in Scranton, she is the daughter of the late Michael and Anna Wrazien Rock.
Mary Ann graduated from St. Paul’s High School in Scranton and worked for over 20 years at Clarks Summit State Hospital as a nurse’s aide. She enjoyed going to the casino and playing bingo. She was a member of St. Patrick Church in Nicholson, the Nicholson Women’s Club, and the Secret Pals. 
Mary Ann is survived by a son, Gary Sabuacak; two daughters, Cindy (Harold) Luther and Donna (Breck) Schreckengost; three grandchildren, Corey (Brittany) Luther, Nicholas and Kendra Sabuacak; one great grandson, Colton Luther; a brother Michael Rock; a sister, Patty Golembeski, and many nieces and nephews.
She was also predeceased by her daughter in law, Karen Sabuacak. 
The family would like to thank the staff at Abington Manor 3rd floor West crew for the excellent care provided to Mary Ann during her stay.
A Mass of Christian burial performed by Rev. Arbogaste Satoun will be held Friday December 20 at 10am in the St. Patrick Church in Nicholson. 
Interment will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Starkville. 
Family and friends may call from 5-8pm Thursday December 19 in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Recreation Center at Abington Manor in honor of Mary Ann.

Charles Mordent

Charles Mordent, 20, of Kingsley, Pa. passed away as a result of a tragic accident Sunday December 8, 2024.

Born in Scranton, PA he is the son of Joseph and Rebecca Galloway Mordent. He graduated from Mountain View High School and the carpentry program in the SCCTC at Elk Lake.

Charlie was extremely kind and thoughtful. He donated his time working as a volunteer at the Hop Bottom Community Food Pantry, Summer Lunch Box Program, and for Kindred Spirits Spay & Neuter program.

Charlie was a good carpenter. He loved the New York Yankees and he enjoyed watching soccer, especially his team, Chelsea FC.

Charles is also survived by his grandparents, James and Wilma Galloway; three brothers, James, Stephen, and his twin, Derrick; girlfriend, Clarissa Muzzy; special Aunts and Uncles Ralph and Judy Welch, Ann Marie Aylesworth, David and Patty Derrick, Steve and Carol Galloway; cousins Jessica, Ashlee, Marissa, Breanna, and Brian; and many other aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family would like to thank Mr. Dave Breeze from Mountain View High School for being a very kind and special teacher who was always there for Charlie.

A memorial service performed by Rev. Phil Richardson and Steve Galloway will be held at 1pm Monday December 16 in the Hop Bottom Church of Hope and Peace, 8 Church Street, Hop Bottom.

Sheri Lynn Fenton, 64, of Tunkhannock passed away surrounded by family Monday December 9, 2024 after a courageous battle with multiple illness.

Born in Tunkhannock, she is the daughter of Ralph Fenton(late) and Cindy Dilmore Collins. Sheri attended Lackawanna Trail High School and worked for many years as a department manager for Walmart.

Sheri was a homebody while not working. She enjoyed and loved the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and family.

The family would like to sincerely thank Tina and Alisha for the outstanding level of care and comfort you both provided around the clock for Sheri during her illness.

Sheri is survived by three sons, Josh (Tina), Ryan (Alisha), Richard Jr. (Dana); a brother, Mark Fenton (Vicki); six grandsons, and one granddaughter.

She was predeceased by her younger brother, Jesse Fenton.

A celebration of Sheri’s life will be held on Friday, December 20 from 6-7pm in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson.
