Wally Gabert, age 67, of Hop Bottom, died Wednesday, January 25 at the Golden LivingCenter in Tunkhannock.
His wife is the former Donna Drake andthey have been married 45 years. Born in Archbald, September 4, 1949 he is the son of the late Joseph and Evelyn Linderman Gabert. He graduated from Archbald High School in 1967 and in 1970 from Johnson Technical School where he studied carpentry. Wally had been employed at Brojack Lumber as was a member of the Black Diamond Fire Company in Archbald since 1967 where he served 10 years as Fire Chief. He was also a member of the Hop Bottom Hose Company since 1990 and wore numerous hats during his 27 years of service. Wally also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and served on the Archbald Cemetery Board of Directors. A memorial service will be held Tuesday February 7th at 8pm in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson with services by Rev. James Madus. Friends may call from 6pm until service time.

Jane F. Thomas, age 89, of Nicholson, died Sunday at the Golden LivingCenter in Tunkhannock. She was born on July 31, 1927, in Troy, N.Y., daughter of the late Charles and Anna Wobroch Albrecht of Watervliet, N.Y. Jane was educated in the St. Patrick Elementary School in Watervliet, N.Y., and graduated from Averill Park Central High School in 1945. She then went to the Mildred Elley Secretarial College in Albany, N.Y., and then worked as a medical secretary in the Rensselaer County Health Department in Troy. Jane (“Janie” to her friends) was called by the lord to be with her late husband, John W. “Jack” Thomas, the man of her dreams, whom she married April 12, 1948. Jack was a state trooper when they married and passed away Jan. 18, 1990. She had a love for dance, singing and big band music. She was a dance instructor and sang with a local band. Jane was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nicholson, and a member of the Legion of Mary, visiting the Golden LivingCenter in Tunkhannock, giving spiritual support to the residents. She also volunteered at the church bingo and clothes closet. Jane touched the heart and lives of many by kindness and thoughtfulness. She was truly loved by her family and friends and will be remembered as an inspiration to all. On behalf of Jane, the family would like to express their deepest appreciation for the excellent and professional care received from the Golden LivingCenter in Tunkhannock, and AseraCare Hospice. Surviving Jane are two sons, Barry Thomas and wife, Debbie, of Center Valley; and Robert Thomas, of Nicholson; one daughter, Debbie Kirchoff and husband, Dan, of Dalton; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was also predeceased by a sister, Marjorie Kennedy; and a brother, Charles Albrecht. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the St. Patrick’s Church, 205 Main St., Nicholson, celebrated by the Rev. Arbogaste Satoun. Interment will take place in the Nicholson Cemetery. A viewing will be held Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State St., Nicholson. Alexandria Casimira Anderson, 19, of Hop Bottom, died Saturday in Lathrop Twp., Susquehanna County, in a motor vehicle accident. Born in North White Plains, N.Y., daughter of Terry and Doris Dmytryszyn Anderson of Hop Bottom, she was a welder for W.C. Welding and was a lover of people. She was always looking to make you feel better, mend hearts and always just wanted to make your day a better one. Alexandria is also survived by a sister, Nikki Mimnaugh, Torrington, Conn.; two brothers, Terry Anderson Jr., Elmsford, N.Y.; and Derreck Anderson, Hop Bottom; maternal grandmother, Patricia Dmytryszn; maternal grandfather, John Dmytryszn; maternal grandmother, Theresa Dmytryszn; paternal grandfather, John Anderson; paternal grandmother, Patti Magee; and paternal grandfather, Jim Magee; and maternal great-grandmother, Nancy Marino. She was preceded in death by maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Dmytryszn. The family will receive friends Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Charles H. Chamberlin Erat, 90, of Kingsley, died Monday at Abington Manor. Her husband of 62 years, Paul Erat, died March 7, 2007. Born in New Milford, daughter of the late Martin and Anna Smith Chamberlin, she was a faith-filled member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Hop Bottom. She loved the outdoors, her gardens, baking and cherished play time with great-grandson, Vincent. Mary is survived by a daughter, Paulette Adams and husband, Lynn Hollis Adams, of Kingsley; two sisters, Etta Kelly, of Susquehanna; and Margaret Machinsky, of Missouri; two granddaughters, Brenda Adams Shertza, of Clifford Twp.; and Andrea Knouse and husband, Jack, of Nanticoke; a great-grandson, Vincent Hollis Shertza; and a foster daughter, Sandra Anicito, and her daughter, Jennifer, of Florida. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Whitney and Doris Eastabrook. Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Grace Lutheran Church, Hop Bottom, with services by the Rev. Murray Brindle. Interment will be held in Maplewood Cemetery, Kingsley. Friends may call one hour prior to service time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church, 351 Greenwood Street, Hop Bottom, PA 18824 Brianna Rose Smarkusky, age 21, of Nicholson, died Thursday at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre. Born in Tunkhannock, she was the daughter of William D. and Mary M. Belcher Smarkusky. Brianna was a senior at Wilkes University and was also employed as a medical technician at the office of Dr. Davis Haire Sr., O.D., in Tunkhannock. Brianna was a loving daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, aunt and girlfriend. She was very active in sports playing softball, basketball, field hockey, track and field, and travel ball. She also belonged to the National Honor Society (high school high honors), Pre-Professional Society and Adventures in Science. Brianna was very involved with 4-H clubs including the Wyoming County Grow’em and Show’em, Elk Mountain Baconeers, Wyoming County Beef Club and Sewing Club. Brianna was also a dairy miss, dairy maid and dairy ambassador. As a result of all her hard work and dedication, she was crowned the 2012-2013 Wyoming-Lackawanna County Dairy Princess. Brianna is also survived by two brothers, Matthew and wife, Brittany, of Nicholson; David and wife, Amanda, of Springville; a sister, Rachel, of Nicholson; paternal grandparents, William and Audrey Smarkusky, of Nicholson; maternal grandmother, Eleanor Belcher, of Springville; her boyfriend, Adam Werner, of Exeter; a niece, Peyton Smarkusky; and many cousins, aunts and uncles. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 205 Main St., Nicholson, celebrated by the Rev. Arbogaste Satoun and the Rev. Gerard McGlone. Those who wish to attend the mass are asked to go directly to the church. A viewing will be held on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State St., Nicholson.
