Jim Wheatley heard natures call and laid down his earthly responsibility December 20, 2019.
A proud American, born in 1933 during WWII in England, served in The British Royal Navy during the Korean War. He became an American citizen while being a Boy Scout Leader. He is a founder of My Brothers Keeper Quilt Group (The Sleeping Bag Project) who has tirelessly worked to help our homeless neighbors stay warm by delivering the much needed sleeping bags to those who live on the street for the past 36 years. Born Albert Edward, he immigrated to Northport, NY where he met and married the love of his life, Florence Kellerman, wife of 58 years. In 1971 they moved to Hop Bottom, PA where they raised their children Gloria Hoeffner (husband William Hoeffner III), Margaret Olsen (husband Olaf Olsen), and son Leonard Wheatley. He is a member of The First Universalist Church, Brooklyn, PA. He worked as a union heavy construction surveyor for The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 15D, where he worked on bridges and waterways in the NYC area. Jim’s compassion for life and dedication to his family has blessed us all. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Mabel I. Payne, 92, of Kingsley died Sunday evening at her home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklyn Payne. Born February 19, 1927 on the family farm in Elkdale, she is the daughter of the late Homer and Laura Snedeker Collum. She was a graduate of the Harford High School and attended the United Methodist Church in South Gibson and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Laurel Chapter 67. Mabel and her husband Frank owned and operated a dairy farm for 40 plus years. Mabel also worked at Irene’s garment factory in Nicholson. Mable was best known for her knitting and baking skills. All of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were adorned with one of her beautiful knitted sweater sets with matching blanket upon birth. No one’s hands ever went cold in the winter as grandma’s knitted gloves were sure to be part of your Christmas gift along with a jar of her homemade strawberry jam. When it came to holidays Mabel always arrived with a plate full of her homemade cookies and every flavor of pie you could imagine. She was especially adored by her great grandchildren who visited her daily to have one of her molasses cookies. There was always a batch ready for them in the cupboard. She also enjoyed watching and feeding the birds from her porch. A piece of our hearts will forever be with her. Special thanks to her main caregiver and shopping partner, granddaughter Cieara Pompey. Also to Dr. Neal Davis and staff for extraordinary care through the years. He collected antiques of all shapes and sizes. Tom always went out of his way to support a veteran and was an avid US military history buff. He was compassionate to species of all kinds and you could find anything from a chipmunk to a black bear grazing in his front yard. A nature lover, he could be found on top of the tallest mountain, next to the tallest trees scouting his “pet deer.” Tom had many passions. When he wasn’t working on the mountain, you could find him at the baccarat table or the high limit room at Mohegan Sun. He also frequented many Karaoke nights in North Eastern PA. Tom loved to cook all hours of the day and night and loved having someone to cook for, but he also enjoyed dining out at many whole-in-the wall restaurants all around town with his love, Fernata. He always said he wanted to stop poverty in one generation. He had a heart the size of an ox and always wanted to make sure his children, family and those he loved were taken care of.
