Wayne A. Taylor, 89, of Hop Bottom, died Saturday at home. His wife is the former Nancy Powers and they had been married 63 years.
Born in Lenox Twp., Susquehanna County in the same house where he died, he was the son of the late Eldon and Stella Wagner Taylor and was a retired dairy farmer. Also surviving are two sons, William and James; and two daughters, Kathy Taylor and Marian Zablotsky, all of Hop Bottom; a sister, Irene Garrett, New Holland; and six grandchildren, Bethany Zablotsky, Lucas Taylor, Marc Taylor, Brendan Evans, Brandi Taylor and Brayden Taylor. Shirley Jean Croasdale, 82, of Nicholson, died Wednesday at the Gardens at Tunkhannock.
Her husband is Jerry Croasdale. They have been married for 54 years. Born in Rochester, N.Y., daughter of the late Richard and Maybell Manzer Merritt, she was a 1955 graduate of Harford High School and a member of the West Nicholson United Methodist Church. Her children and grandchildren were the most important part in her life. Her family always came first and she always put them ahead of herself. She loved making afghans, cooking and taking care of her flowers. Also surviving are two sons, Richard and Vern, both of Nicholson; a sister, Beverly Macrae, Hallstead; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Lena Mae Croasdale. Funeral service will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State St., Nicholson, with services by Carlton Ball. Interment will be held in the Nicholson Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. Kenneth Paul Chapman Jr. of Kingsley, Brooklyn Twp., died Friday at home.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Kenneth P. Chapman Sr. He was employed as an over-the-road truck driver. Ken is survived by two sons, Kevin Chapman and Brian Chapman and wife, Jenn; a sister, Michele Murray and husband, Fred; two grandsons, Keden and Domenick; and his companion, Bernadette Rock and her three sons, Bob, Ryan and Jason. Eleanor Nowacky, 89, formerly of Nicholson, died Tuesday at the Gardens at Tunkhannock. Her husband, John, died in 1980.
Born in Scranton, the daughter of the late Frank and Helen Merinski Nowacky, she was a member of St. Patrick Church in Nicholson and enjoyed her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and playing Bingo. Eleanor is survived by a daughter, Linda Hollenbeck and husband, Gary; two sisters, Grace Modrzejewski and Caroline Yachymiak; a sister-in-law, Eve Marusiak; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Brenda Nowacky, and a sister, Dorothy Walsh. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. Arbogaste Satoun will be Saturday at 11 in St. Patrick Church in Nicholson. Interment will be held in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Nicholson. Born in Scranton, the son of William Crock of Nicholson and Elizabeth Watson Crock of Clarks Summit, he was employed as a commissioning and qualification technician at Procter and Gamble and had previously worked for the W.S. Crock & Sons Feed Mill in Nicholson. He was a member of the Nicholson Fire company and was a former assistant chief. Todd loved children and was an outstanding athlete in golf, bowling, basketball and especially baseball. In 1987, Todd’s pitching helped lead the Lackawanna Trail Lions baseball team to a 4th place state finish, and then he moved on to play baseball for Keystone College and Jacksonville University. Todd is also survived by a son, Connor Crock, and a daughter, Cameron Crock, both of Nicholson; his fiancée, Sherri Russell, of Lake Carey, and her children, Travis and Tyler Russell; his sister, Kelly Quick and husband, Darrin, and their children, Coby and Caden, of Endwell, N.Y.; William Crock’s companion, Pat Wadlington; the mother of his children, Vanessa Polovitch, of Nicholson; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State St., Nicholson, by the Rev. Leslie Bullock. Interment will be held in the Nicholson Cemetery. A viewing will be held Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nicholson Fire Company. William Joseph Katona, of Lake Winola, died at home July 10, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife Mae Barney Katona in 2001.
Born August 23,1940 in Warren, OH. Bill attended Warren G Harding High School. Bill joined the Marines in 1958 serving until 1961. He lived in several areas throughout the country before he married the former Mae Barney on May 9, 1981 and settled at Lake Winola. Bill was employed in the paper products industry for 25 years before retiring. Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed camping at Lake Timberline in St. Joseph, Susquehanna County. Bill is survived by his sisters Betty and Walt Lucas of Newberry, OH, Marie Chasser of Cortland, OH and a brother Paul and Louise Katona of Southington, OH. Stepchildren Joanne (Randy) Decker of Nicholson, Shirley (Richard) Masters of Kingsley, Fred (Terri) Conrad of South Gibson, Robin (Becky) Conrad, Darlene Brown of Factoryville and several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by a stepson Gary L Conrad and a missing stepdaughter Shelva Rafte. A memorial service will be held at Charles Litwin Funeral Home, Nicholson, Pa. on Friday August 3,2018 10 a.m. Interment following at Clifford Valley Cemetery. John W. Hazen, 83, of Nicholson, died Sunday, July 8 at Mountain View Skilled Nursing Facility in Scranton, Pa.
John was born in Dunmore, Pa., son of the late Carl Hazen and Mae Hazen Benedict on May 25, 1935. He went to Dunmore High School, was a United States Navy veteran and an active member of the Nicholson United Methodist Church. He enjoyed long walks in the woods, hunting, fishing, working in the yard, being a craftsman, reading, and spending time with his loving family and friends. John is survived by his loving children, Theresa and husband, Lue Titus; Carl Hazen, Jud Hazen, Mary Hazen and Debbie Townsend; grandchildren, Marisa Titus, Michele Titus, Nicholas Perry, John Hazen; Sara and husband, Wade Miller; Sondra and husband, Milton Gonzalez; and Brett and wife, Melissa Hazen; his great-grandchildren, Peyton Gonzalez, Giovanni Gonzalez, Tristan Gonzalez and Matthew Hazen; and brother, Carl and wife, Gene Hazen. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley; son, John Hazen; and daughter, Tammy Hazen. The family will have a memorial service in Connecticut in September to honor John. Arrangements are by the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State St., Nicholson. Eleanore J. Belcher, 77, of Springville, died Monday at home. Her husband, Matthew Belcher Jr., died in 2000.
Born in Kearny, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Herman and Rebecca Hamelton Schaepe. Before retiring, she and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm for many years. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Nicholson and taught Sunday School at the parish. She also was a graduate of Keystone College, a 4-H leader and a secretary for Eastern Milk Producers. Surviving are two daughters, Mary Smarkusky and Teresa Flasher; two sons, Donald and Timothy Belcher; two sisters, Margaret Johnson and Paula Osborne; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 205 Main St., Nicholson, to be celebrated by the Rev. Arbogaste Satoun. Born in Hop Bottom, he is the son of the late Ernest and Electa Gumear Compton. Before retiring, he was a diesel mechanic at WW Novitch International Garage in Nicholson for 41 years. William is survived by two daughters, Hope Pugh and Laura Wickizer; a son, William R. Compton Jr.; a sister, Betty Testa; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State St., Nicholson, with services by the Rev. Richard Womer of the Tunkhannock Assembly of God Church. There will be a viewing Saturday from 2 p.m. until service time. Glenn Spickerman, age 52, of Factoryville died Monday at home.
Born in Scranton, he is the son of the late Bruce and Retha Stanton Spickerman. He was a graduate of Mountain View High School and was formerly employed by Peoples Mobile Home Transportation. He is survived by his companion, Priscilla Tribble, three brother, James, Brice, and Marcus; eight sisters, Sandra Whitmore, Brenda Empet, Elizabeth Starks, Annettia Carpenetti, Regina Spickerman, Raquel Spickerman, Katina Dennison and Rebecca Stine; his foster parents, John and Frances Zurn; aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by Erma Banks. A memorial service will be held at a later date. |
