Vernon “Butch” Evans, 70, of Lady Lake, Fla., formerly of Nicholson, passed away on Nov. 13, 2021, at home.
Butch was born in Binghamton, N.Y., to Cradoc and Marjorie Evans on Sept. 6, 1951. He went to school in Factoryville, Pa. He married Diane on June 21, 2002, in Carbondale, Pa. He worked in research and development for P&G for 26 years. He was involved in the Old Friends Golf League, where he had gained many lifelong friends. Butch was preceded in death by his parents, Cradoc and Marjorie Evans; and his younger sister, Celene VanVleck. Butch is survived by his loving wife, Diane; sons, Timothy (Liza), Vernon Cradoc Jr. (Amanda); sisters, Connie, Bonnie (John), Roxana; grandchildren, Zoey, Vernon Cradoc III; several nieces and nephews. There will be a viewing Sunday, Nov. 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State St., Nicholson. A blessing service and entombment will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Our Mother of Sorrows Mausoleum, Finch Hill, Carbondale. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to charity of your choice.

 Susan E. Love, devoted wife and mother, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on November 17th, 2021. She is now reunited with her mother in heaven.
Born in Warren, Ohio on January 30, 1943 to the late Luxor and Julia Parti Marko, she resided on Love Road in Hop Bottom, PA for over 50 years. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister Helen and brothers John, George, Louis, Paul, James, and Eugene. Sue was a graduate of Trumbell Memorial Hospital School of Nursing In Warren, OH. She worked for most of her life, including 20 years at Montrose General Hospital. She retired from Clarks Summit State Hospital in 2004. Sue is survived by her husband of 55 years, Glenn; daughters Molly Love-Birosak (Thomas), Bonnie Love-Colwell (Matthew) and Roxanne Love Robinson; grandson Jacob Robinson and granddaughters Devon and Payton Colwell; and several nieces and nephews. Sue enjoyed dancing with her husband, shopping with her daughters and spending time with friends. She had a strong faith in the Lord and was a member of the Hop Bottom United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and even arranged a little church band as her girls were growing up. She was devoted to her children. She never missed a music lesson, concert or sporting event. She was a hard worker and a kind soul who always did for others. Nesky, 73, of Nicholson passed away Saturday, November 6 2021 at Regional Hospital in Scranton.
Born June 9, 1948 she is the daughter of the late William and Eva Pasterchick Billets. Prior to retiring, Janice worked locally as a bank accountant was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Nicholson. Janice is survived by two nieces, Jessie Billets and Jayme Oulton; and seven great nieces and nephews, Elizabeth, Zachary, Keith-Patrick, Preston, Michael, Jillian, and Liam. She was predeceased by a daughter, Jennifer Nesky; two brothers, William and Alan Billets, and a nephew, Ian Billets. Services will be private at the convenience of the family.  Arthur G. “Jerry” Pelka, 78, of Tunkhannock passed away Monday November 1st at home. His wife is Mary Dowd Pelka and they celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary October 5th.
Born in Dover, New Jersey March 1, 1943 he is the son of the late Arthur and Esther Carter Pelka. He was a member and past senior warden of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and had also served on the church Vestry. He worked for many years as an insurance adjuster prior to retiring from Mutual Benefit Group in 2007. Arthur graduated from Morris Hills Regional High School in Rockaway, NJ. He was then employed by the US Post Office for two years after which he joined the Army. Arthur served during the Vietnam War stationed in Fort Bragg, NC as a sergeant for the 82nd Airborne. He was member of the VFW and American Legion. After his service, his career in insurance adjusting began. He was a member and past president of both the NEPA Claims Association and the Pennsylvania Claims Managers Association. Jerry was an outstanding sportsman. He excelled at baseball, football, and basketball in high school and was offered a tryout for the Milwaukee Braves. He was a life member of the Factoryville Sportsmen’s Club serving as horseshoe chairman for numerous years and loved Wednesday sporting clays. He also enjoyed woodworking. He had a passion for the outdoors and hunting that is hard to surpass but what he truly cherished is the time he was able to spend coaching his children, watching his grandchildren play sports, and spending time with his family. Arthur is also survived by two daughters, Laura Cook and Tamara Zona (John); two sons, Jerry Pelka(Shana) and John Pelka (Kelly); three brothers, Kenneth Pelka, Allen Pelka, and Arnold Pelka; seven grandchildren, Christine Hubbard, Darryl Cook, Josh Cook, Sam Pelka, Isaac Pelka, Brianna Pelka, and Jack Pelka; two great grandchildren, Isabell Cook and Gabriel Hubbard; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Kathryn Pelka. The funeral will be Friday, November 5th at 11am with services by Pastor Lou Divis in the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Tunkhannock. Interment will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Park in Dallas. Calling hours will be from 4-7pm Thursday, November 4th in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson. On Saturday, October 30, 2021, Gerald “Jerry” Rettberg, 70, of Harford, PA, walked through the gates of heaven.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jan; three children, daughter Abigail (Matthew) Simons, son Daniel and son Charles (Antoinette); his grandsons Gabriel and William; his brother, James (Mary) and sister, Jackie. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse “Jack” and Dolores Rettberg. He graduated with a degree in economics from Wilkes University. He retired from Emerson (Pittsburgh, PA). He was also formerly employed by Bendix Corp (Montrose, PA) and Universal (Binghamton, NY). He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, a lifetime member of the Harford Volunteer Fire Company, and a former volunteer with the Hop Bottom Hose Company. His love shined the brightest when he was with his family, relaxing on his porch. Services will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at First Baptist Church in New Milford, PA. Mulhern, age 81, of Nicholson died Saturday at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton. Her husband, Joseph G. Mulhern, passed away in 2019.
Born Jan. 7, 1940, in Exeter, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Mesaras Brek. Maureen was a member of the St. Patrick Church in Nicholson for 56 years. She was a former Avon lady and past member of the Nicholson Women’s Club. She enjoyed making ceramics, taking Florida trips with Joe, going to dog shows and attending sporting events with her grandchildren. Maureen loved and looked forward to Sunday breakfast with her family. Maureen is survived by two sons, Kevin and wife, Lori; and Michael and wife, Leslie; a daughter, Maureen Brace and husband, David; a brother, Daniel Brek; six grandchildren, David Brace and wife, Marissa; Adam Brace and fiancée, Kristi Krishak; Colleen Glaser and husband, Carl; Colin Mulhern, Gavin Mulhern and Keira Mulhern; and a great-granddaughter, Ella Brace. She was predeceased by a son, Joseph G. Mulhern Jr. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. Arbogaste Satoun will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 205 Main St., Nicholson. She is predeceased by her husband, Edward Zukowski. She was born in Carbondale, PA to parents Majorie S. Kenyon and Maurice Kenyon.
Maureen is survived by her two sons, Randy Zukowski, Florida; and Todd Zukowski, Texas. She is predeceased by her daughter Kendra Schubert, Chinchilla. She is also survived by her siblings: Robert Kenyon, Nicholson, and Rachel Schiavone Rood, Nicholson as well as her son-in-law Greg Schubert, Chinchilla, and daughter-in-law Reshma Zukowski, Florida. She was a devoted grandmother and will be survived by her grandchildren: Sloane Schubert, Zane Schubert, and Grey Schubert (all of Chinchilla); she is also survived by her granddaughters Riley and Reanne Zukowski, Florida. Maureen enjoyed being part of the community that she was born and raised in. She spent her whole life in Nicholson, where she raised her family and enjoyed time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed her weekly lunches with her friends. A memorial service to honor Maureen’s life will be planned at a later date.  Donald William Smith, 76, of Montrose passed away Wednesday October 6 at the Allied Services Hospice Center. His wife is Elise Claudé Smith. Born in East Northport, NY, he is the son of the late Peter and Marie Gruner Smith. He retired after many years as a program manager. Donald was a proud Vietnam Army veteran and a member of Ayers Stone VFW Post 5642 in Montrose. Donald was extremely proud of his son Christopher for being in law enforcement and of his daughter Nona for being a teacher. He got his greatest joy watching his grandson play baseball and teaching him chess and enjoyed all of his granddaughters stories of chasing chickens and playing on the farm. Donald is also survived by a daughter, Nona Williams (Brian); son, Christoper Smith (fiancé, Fran Reilly); and two grandchildren, Owen and Abigail. Funeral services will be Monday, October 11 at 11:00am in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson with services by Chaplain Gerlin Valencia. Interment will follow in the Union Cemetery, Lathrop Township. Donations may be sent to the Ayers Stone VFW Post 5642, 16972 SR 706, Montrose, PA 18801  Alberta Mroz age 95 of Nicholson died Friday October 1, at her home. Her husband Chester passed away in 1994. Born in Scranton she is the daughter of the late Albert and Helen Chiappini. She was a member of Saint Patrick Church in Nicholson and owned and operated a diner before retiring. She is survived by a son Chester and two daughters Nancy Schultz Murphy and Sandra Mulgrew. Ten grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son Albert and a daughter Sharon and 2 brothers and a sister.
A mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Arbogaste Satoun will be held Wednesday October 6 at 10:00 AM in Saint Patrick Church in Nicholson. Franko, 94, of Hop Bottom died Thursday September 30, 2021.
Her husband Joseph J. Franko passed away in 1994. Born in Scranton, August 13, 1927 she is the daughter of the late Raymond and Anna Mikucki Janicki. Se was employed and retired as a seamstress in the garment industry. She was a member of ILGWU and VFW auxiliary Elk Mountain Post 8488. Dorothy is survived by a grandson, Matthew Cokelyand companion Tara Williams of Springville. She was preceded in death by a beloved son, Joseph “Butchie”; a loving daughter, Dorothy Ann “Dee”; five brothers, Walter, Roman, Joseph, Chester, and Stanley; and a sister Charlotte Malinski. A blessing service will be held Friday, October 8 at 10:00am in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson celebrated by Rev. ArbogasteSatoun of St. Patrick Church of Nicholson. Interment will be held in the St. Patrick Cemetery in Nicholson. |
