Rev. Kim E. Bode lived his life in service to God, his community and his family, which ended suddenly on June 9, 2024. Born Nov. 2nd, 1950, in Chicago IL to Carl and Geneva Bode, he felt called to the ministry early at the age of 13. He received a master’s degree from Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield IL in 1976. He served churches in Gary, IN and Munson, PA before coming to Grace Lutheran in Hop Bottom where he served for 29 years, retiring in 2019. He taught at the Lutheran Academy in Scranton for 3 years.
A man known for a love of church and family, you could often find him running a 5k, traveling with his wife, preaching from the pulpit or adventuring with his grandchildren. A donor of over 22 gallons of blood, he recognized the value of human life and did all he could to rally for it. Passionate about trains and chickens, he shared many of his joys with his family, and was always ready to help anyone with their projects, especially if it involved a chainsaw. He dearly enjoyed his time volunteering with the Hop Bottom Hose Fire Company. He is survived by his wife, Anne (Oswald) Bode, of 49 years, his 5 children: Jessica (Bode) Nordquist and husband Russell Nordquist from Rochester, NY, Lisa (Bode) Sloyer and husband Paul Sloyer from Baltimore, MD, Amanda (Bode) Burkhart and husband Nicholas Burkhart from Pittsburgh PA, Joshua Bode and wife Meghan (McHale- Rogers) Bode from Chicago, IL, and Samantha Bode from Scranton, PA. He is survived by 8 grandchildren: Rowan, Judah, Bode, Eleanor, Geneva, Henry, Carlton and Colin. He is survived by his siblings Brett Bode (Carolyn), Cathy Mangan, Kirk Bode (Barb) and Craig Bode (Mary). A viewing will be held on Friday, June 14th 5:00-8:00pm in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson, PA. An additional viewing will follow on Saturday, June 15th at 10:00am in the Grace Lutheran Church in Hop Bottom with funeral service at 11:00am; with luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, we ask you to send donations to Grace Lutheran Church in Hop Bottom (the narthex fund), the Hop Bottom Hose Fire Company or the Lutheran Academy in Scranton, PA.

May our good and gracious heavenly Father give you peace and comfort that only He is able to provide. I will always have fond memories of Kim. He had a lot influence on me as I served as Circuit Counselor and 4th Vice-president in the Eastern District. I will keep his family in my prayers during this time of bereavement.

So saddened to hear of Pr Bode's passing. We've had the pleasure of knowing him for many years as a kind, compassionate man of God. He was a true friend to Immanuel Lutheran Church/ Scranton over the years. One of his most recent callings was his faithful involvement in The Lutheran Academy. He was a mentor to students who would seek him out for any and all issues; a spiritual counselor to the staff; a listening ear to anyone in need. In addition to being the weekly Chapel leader/religious instructor, he was a living example of Christian love. Sincere sympathy and God's strength and comfort to his lovely wife Anne and family.

Please accept my most heartfelt sympathies for your loss. My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time. I found this quote to be true: "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal; love leaves a memory no one can steal."

Elder Brother Bode was a dear encourager, who became the "Dean of our Susquehanna Circuit" with his longevity of faithful pastoral service in the Endless Mountains and beyond. He gave a rip, he lived it. And thanks be to God that he now lives forever with Jesus and he will receive his perfect body in Heaven, that eternal building built by God (2 Corinthians 5).

I'm so sorry to read about Kim's death. My thoughts and prayers are with Anne and his family. I won't be able to get to the viewing or the funeral, but you all will be in my thoughts and prayers. Kim was an active member of our Lectionary Group and our Ministerium. His commitment to God, the Church and his community will always be remembered. Will always remember those picnics and cook outs at Kim and Anne's. Great time of fellowship. Kim will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace, my friend. Well done thy good and faithful servant!

Annie and I remember Pastor Bode "Kim" as a great mentor with our children and many others in the community during his years of assisting with Cub Scout Pack 99 in Brooklyn and coaching Youth Soccer at Mountain View. Most of our socializing with Pastor Bode took place in impromptu meetings in Hop Bottom over the years at the bank, or Post Office or on the sidewalk heading to Blacks Store. Our conversations always left the impression he was a true man of god who followed the spiritual leadership of Jesus and appreciated the supreme worth of every human personality. I always admired his

I can only imagine the heartbreak and hole you are experiencing as I deal with my own after knowing Pastor Bode for only 3 years. Over those 3 years he has blessed us with his loving, faithful, fun pointing us to King Jesus through his teaching us the Bible. Our last day with him was Thursday. He reviewed the chapel focus of Jesus being the Vine and our need to abide. ( He had to throw in that a Bode is one who abided in the past and has made their abode with Jesus.) He asked the children what they thought heaven was like and listened intently to their answers. Then we sang and danced to the old chorus, "Heaven is a wonderful place...I want to be there." TLA was blessed by our Pastor Bode. My love and prayers are with you.

I remember Pastor Bode and his wife. They were so nice to all of us young people at St. Phillip's Lutheran in Gary Indiana. He will always be remembered as truly a man of God. His wife was very sweet also. May God bless his entire family.
