 Lorraine H. Schmidt, 88, of Nicholson passed away from complications of kidney failure on February 7, 2024 at Regional Hospital in Scranton.
She is the wife of the late David E. Schmidt Sr. who passed away in 2010. Lorraine was born in Chicopee Falls, MA on September 14, 1935 daughter of the late Willard W. Irion Sr. and Helen P. Irion of Nicholson, PA. She attended Nicholson High School and graduated in 1953. Lorraine and husband Dave owned and operated Schmidt’s Valley Farm Market for many years. After closing the market Lorraine worked for Macy’s. She specialized in Ralph Lauren fashions and catered to many special customers. Lorraine and David also worked together selling plants at the Feed Mill Finds in Nicholson. Lorraine was a member of the Nicholson United Methodist Church for over fifty years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, Nicholson Women’s Club, Nicholson Business Association, Nicholson Heritage Association, and the Secret Pal Club. Lorraine is survived by a son, David E. Schmidt Jr. & companion Lynn Gower; two daughters, Bette Ann Cobb & husband Marshall Cobb, and Susan Schmidt; a brother, William W. Irion Jr. and wife, Sandra Irion; a sister, Joan Jenkins; two granddaughters, Aubrey Schmidt Scattone & husband Keith Scattone, and Katherine Schmidt Saioni & husband Mike Saioni; a grandson, Willard Cobb; three great grandchildren, Sal, Lucca, and Enzo Saioni; two nephews, Richard Jenkins Jr. and Robert Jenkins & fiancé Patti Collins; and a grandniece, Taylor Jenkins. Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, David; and a brother in law, Richard Jenkins. Viewing and calling hours will be held Saturday, February 17 from 10am -12 Noon with funeral services at 12 Noon by Rev. John Whitehead of the United Methodist Church of Nicholson in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson. Interment will be in the Nicholson Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Beverly Helen Michaels (Frederici) passed away peacefully Thursday, February 8, 2024, at The Gardens in Tunkhannock, PA. She was born in March 19, 1937 in Carbondale, PA; she was the daughter of Henry C. and Mildred J Frederici (Moon). Her husband of 61 years was the former Thomas John Michaels who passed in January 2018.
A lifetime resident of Benton Twp., she was a graduate of Harford High School. As a teenager, she worked at the Clifford Market. She spent much of her adult life working in the community. She transported school students for many years. Beverly loved giving time to the Ladies Auxiliary at the Fleetville Fire Company and also helped work and support the Harford Fair. Also surviving are daughters Carol Atkinson and husband, Chris, Jane Townsend and husband, Jim; Sandi Yushinsky and husband, Tom; and Deborah Josephite and husband Anthony; her twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. The family will have calling hours on Monday, February 19 from 11-1pm with funeral services at 1pm by Dr. Rev. William Townsend in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson. He was born June 4, 1958 son of Norman and Mary Kittle Stout. He was a graduate of Lackawanna Trail High School and was an eight year Navy veteran. Gary is survived by his wife, Anne Oakes Stout, Candor, NY; his mother, Mary Stout; two sons, Nathan R. Stout, Candor, NY., and Heath T. Stout, Houston, TX.; a sister, Sharon Wademan; a brother, Russell (Donna) Stout; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Norman Stout; son, Shane Stout; brother, Stephen N. Stout; and sister, Kathleen Merritt. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held for family and friends at a later date.  John Alden Byram, 81, of Nicholson Township, passed away Thursday at the Meadow View Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Montrose.
Born in Morristown, NJ., he is the son of the late Woodrow and Edna Norton Byram. He was an Army veteran and served during Vietnam. John was a carpenter, electrician, and a Jack of All trades. He and his twin brother, Bob, worked together building and fixing all things under the sun for many years. John was a very kind man with a heart of gold and a legendary beard who was always right there to lend a helping hand. He is survived by a sister, Nancy Elaine Byrne; a niece, Nadine Grothmann; a grand nephew, Gregg Grothmann; and a grand niece, Audrey Grothmann. He is also survived his girls that he loved dearly and thought of as his own, Heather, Crystal, Nicole, Julie, and Faith; their families and all of their children which he dearly loved. He was predeceased by his twin brother, Robert "Ebb" Byram, in 2017. There will be calling hours and viewing from 5-7pm Monday, February 5 in the Charles H. Richard Stanley Lochen, 83 of Nicholson passed away Thursday, January 25th after a brief illness.
Born in Nicholson, Dick was the son of the late Paul and Ramona Lochen. Dick was a lifelong resident of Nicholson, a town he cared about deeply. He served his community as an active firefighter for sixty-five years, and was fire chief of the Nicholson Fire Company for 35 years. Prior to his retirement, Dick was proprietor of Lochen's Market where he enjoyed the company of his customers and special employees. He loved the outdoors and spent his free time hunting in West Nicholson and fishing with his best friend, Joe Woolsey. He was a founding member of the Nicholson Sportsman's Club and taught hunter safety to the youth in his town. An avid golfer, Dick enjoyed spending time golfing with his son and grandsons. Dick was deeply committed to his family. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-one years, Sarah Jane (Watson). He is also survived by his son Rick and his wife Lisa; three grandsons, Richard III and wife Ashley, Nicholson, Matthew, Elgin Illinois and Bradley, Nicholson; his great granddaughter, Harper Anne; a brother, William; and a sister Paula. The family would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to all the friends and neighbors who have lent support, as well as Allied Hospice for their care during his brief stay. Born on Worchester, NY he is the son of the late Helmut and Hannah Jobmann Reploeg. Prior to retiring he worked in construction and was a Navy veteran. He was an honorary member of the 2nd Brigade motorcycle club. David is survived by two sons, Kurt and Carl; a sister, Ann Ferrerio; and several grandchildren. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson  Arthur R. Wadge III, 45, of Nicholson passed away Sunday, January 21 at home.
Born in Scranton, he is the son of Arthur R. Wadge Jr. of Nicholson and the late Joan B. Teserovitch Wadge. Prior to his illness he was employed as the maintenance manager for Nicholson Borough and was also employed at Nicholson NAPA auto parts. He was a lifetime member of the Nicholson Fire Company. He was a former coach of the Nicholson Christy Mathewson Girls Little League softball team and a longtime member of the Nicholson Athletic Association. Artie was an avid hunter, loved bowling, and would go out of his way to help anyone. He was fond of telling jokes and his favorite saying was “Don’t let your meatloaf!” Arthur is also survived by three sisters, Sherry Anderson, Valerie Wadge, and Stacey Derylak; his paternal grandmother, Mary Oakley; one niece and one nephew; and aunts and uncles. Haussler Jr., 80, of Dalton passed away Monday, January 15, 2024 at Geisinger CMC Hospital in Scranton after a brief illness.
Born in Dalton, he is the son of the late Walter and Gladys Phillips Haussler. Walter was a 1961 graduate of Lackawanna Trail Junior/Senior High School where he excelled in sports and was captain of both the basketball and baseball teams. Upon graduation he entered the United States Navy for which he served proudly. He was honorably discharged as Chief Petty Officer. After returning home, he was employed by PennDot. In 1970 he was hired by Wes Herron at Nicholson Lumber where he was a devoted employee until his retirement in 2005. Walter was a lifelong member of the Dalton Fire Company in which he served many offices. He was also a lifelong member of the Dalton United Methodist Church. Walter was a hardworking man with a hilarious sense of humor. Everyone enjoyed talking with Walt at the “Yard”. He was a loving and generous son, brother, uncle, and friend. He was predeceased by his parents; older brother, William Haussler; and nephew, Mark Haussler. Walter is survived by his loving sister, Linda (William) Herron ; sister in law, Ruth Haussler; nieces, Beth (David) Daub and Kim (Tim) Stiteler; nephew, Bruce (Michelle) Herron; great nephew, Evan (Brittany) Herron; great nieces, Lindsay and Rachel Daub, Kari Stiteler, and Emily Herron; and great great niece, Lilah Herron. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State St., Nicholson  Nancy E. Taylor, 91, of Hop Bottom, Lenox Township, passed away Monday January 15 at Allied Services Hospice Center in Scranton.
Her husband, Wayne Taylor, passed away in 2018. They were married in 1955 and married for 63 years when he passed. Born in Kingsley, she is the daughter of the late Cleon and Marion Jackson Powers. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star. Through the years she cared for and babysat many local children. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Nancy is survived by two daughters, Marian Zablotsky (Harry) and Kathy Taylor (companion Jay Seamans); two sons, William Taylor and James Taylor (Laurie); a brother, Robert Powers; six grandchildren, Bethany Horn (Christian), Lucas Taylor, Marc Taylor (Alyssa), Brendan Evans, Brandi Taylor, and Brayden Taylor; and two great grandchildren, Hallie Mae Evans and Jack Taylor. She was predeceased by a brother, Richard. The family would like to thank Allied Services Hospice Center for the excellent care and respect shown to their mother during her time there. Funeral services celebrated by her grandson, Rev. Lucas Taylor, will be held Saturday at 3pm in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson. There will be a viewing Saturday from 1pm until service time. Interment will be held in the Tower Cemetery at West Lenox at a later date.  Beverly Herbert, 88, of Hop Bottom passed away on Sunday, December 24 at Barnes Kasson Hospital in Susquehanna.
Her husband, Lewis, passed away in 2018. Born in Harford, she is the daughter of the late Wesley and Margaret Grinell Erhardt. She was a member of the Hop Bottom United Methodist Church. Beverly was an avid traveler and loved sitting on her porch watching people. Beverly is survived by two daughters, Michelle Fritz (Ronald) and Marlene Grubbs; two sons, Jeffrey Herbert (Paula Smith) and Richard Herbert (Michele); nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren,; and one great great grandchild. She was predeceased by a son, Dennis; and three brothers, Gary, Neil, and William Gamble. Services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
