Jean Kelly, 89, of Nicholson, Lathrop Township passed away September 8 at Allied Services Skilled Nursing in Scranton.
Her husband, John Kelly, passed away in 2010. Born April 9, 1935 in Passaic, New Jersey; she is the daughter of the late Zigmund and Stephanie Vican Panyko. Jean attended Passaic High School and is of the Catholic faith. She worked at Stacy Fabric Mills, Wood Ridge NJ. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, playing bingo and going to the casino. Jean loved her home in the country and spending time enjoying the scenery. Jean is survived by two daughters, Rita DeNude, and Donna (Harry) Haralambides; a sister, Alice J. Pointek; a half brother, Joey Panyko; a half sister, Patricia Noblejas; three grandchildren and two great grand children. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, September 16 at 11:00am, celebrated by Rev. Arbogaste Satoun, in St. Patrick Catholic Church. 205 Main Street, Nicholson. George Daniel Mulqueen, 72, of Nicholson, Pennsylvania, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2024.
Born December 1, 1951, in Jersey City, New Jersey, he is the son of the late Thomas Mulqueen and Elizabeth (Betty) Mulqueen. He is preceded in death by both his parents, Thomas and Betty, his three brothers Charles, William and Thomas, brother-in-law David Lane, and son-in-law Steve Myers. He is survived by his fiancée Jeanne Poplawsky and her son Jeffrey, sister Patricia Mulqueen Lane, daughters Iantha Mulqueen Myers and Naomi Mulqueen Johnson and son-in-law Nathaniel, grandchildren Matthew Clutter, Jacob Clutter, Antoinette Durrant, Miles Johnson, and Jasmine Johnson, and many nieces and nephews. He was good friends with Bill for the last 38 years. A memorial service officiated by Rev. Arbogaste Satoun will be on Saturday, September 14 at 12 Noon in the Charles H. Frank, 64, of Nicholson died Thursday, August 22 at Geisinger CMC in Scranton.
Born in Red House, NY is the son of Jacob and Lida Woodward Frank. Joe graduated from Addison High School, Addison NY where he wrestled and then furthered his education at BOCES of NY trade school. Joe drove for COLTS bus for many years and was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 0168. Joe was a man of great faith. As an ordained minister, he served his calling at Franklin Forks Assembly of God and as an evangelist at local churches in the area as well as many others across the Eastern United States. He was a member of Our Father’s House Church in Scranton. Generous and kind, Joe donated and volunteered countless hours at his food pantry, Bread Basket of NEPA, in Scranton. Joe is survived by his wife of 33 years, Rhonda Funston Frank. He is also survived by daughters, Linsday Carter, Olivia O’Brien, and Eliza Frank; a son, Josiah Frank; two step children, Casey Fryer and Katrina Fryer; several siblings; and several foster siblings. He was proceeded in death by his mother and father, both foster parents, James and Anna Dominick of Addison New York and several siblings. A memorial service performed by Rev. Robert Walls will be held Saturday, September 7 at 11am at Our Father’s House, 1820 Church Ave, Scranton. Friends and family may call from 9:30am until time of service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local food pantry. Joseph Nicholas Polovitch, a beloved dairy farmer, passed away peacefully on August 22nd at the age of 83. Born on the Polovitch farm in Nicholson to Nicholas and Helen Polovitch (Onufry), Joseph was a dedicated steward of the land and livestock at JB Farm. His life was marked by tireless work, unwavering commitment and a deep love of family. The light of his life was his loving wife Bernadine who was always by his side. They celebrated 58 years of marriage in July.
From an early age, Joe was drawn to the rhythms of rural life. Growing up on the farm, he learned the values of hard work, integrity and respect for nature. Those values will live on through his family. Joe was a loving and devoted husband to his true love Bernadine (Kosik), father of four children Joanne Kalman (Brian), Jennifer Deom (Frank), Jeff Polovitch (Lucy) and Jason Polovitch (Vanessa). He cherished his 11 grandchildren, Katie, Emily, Ryan, Erik, Jeremy, AJ, Abby, Zachary, Adam, Cameron and Connor and three great-grandchildren Tommy, Tanner and Elsie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Arbogaste Satoun on Wednesday August 28th at noon at St. Patrick’s Church, 205 Main Street Nicholson. Her husband, Wallace O. Mead, passed away in 2006. Born in Binghamton, NY she is the daughter of the late David and Bessie Hulbert Wood. She was a member of the Lake Sheridan Bible Chapel. Prior to retiring she had been an AT&T telephone operator and an election poll worker for Nicholson Township. Marjorie is survived by two sons, Frederick and Michael Marks; six daughters, Melody Best, Michele Henricks, Martia VanEtten, Marjorie Luke, Hester Marks, and Velvet Marks; a stepson, David Mead, a stepdaughter, LeAnn Stebbins, a sister, Carol Stephenson, sixteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. She was predeceased by her first husband, Frederick Marks. Funeral services will be Monday July 22nd at 11am in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson with services by Rev. Karl Silfee. There will be a viewing from Sunday 4-7pm and 1 hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. James David Huffsmith, 63, of Nicholson, died Saturday July 13th at home.
Born in Scranton on March 15, 1961 he is the son of the late Edward F. Huffsmith and Margaret J. Taylor Huffsmith. Jim graduated from Lackawanna Trail High School. After high school he earned an Associate’s degree from Keystone College. He furthered his education at East Stroudsburg University. Upon completion of his education, he worked for many years at Proctor & Gamble and more recently as a successful self-employed building contractor. Jim was a real salt of the earth man. He like to hunt, fish, and golf. He loved to spend time with his family. His generosity, compassion, and kindness reached far and wide. He truly was a man who had an open helping hand for anyone in need. Jim coached Lackawanna Trail Football and Wrestling for many years and also was a Foster Parent to many children. Jim is survived by four brothers, Edward F. Huffsmith Jr., Richard Huffsmith, Thomas (Lisa) Huffsmith, and Robert (Laura) Huffsmith; a son, Andrew (Grace) Huffsmith; a granddaughter, Sienna Huffsmith; many nieces and nephews; and his lifelong sidekicks Joe Ross, Don Williams, and Randy Flannery. Jim was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Lisa Huffsmith; and a nephew, Edward F. Huffsmith, III. Family and friends may call from 4-7pm Thursday July 18 at the funeral home. William McCall Jr., 77, of Jets Lane, Factoryville, PA passed away unexpectedly at GWV Hospital on Sunday, July, 7. Wil is the son of Beverly Crawford Chapin and William McCall Sr. and was raised by his grandparents, Frank and Anna Crawford. Wil married his second soulmate, Eula Hudock, in 2010.
Wil was a 1964 graduate of Bloomsburg High School. After high school he received a CPA degree from Wilkes Barre Business College. Wil then entered the US Navy during the Vietnam era and served on the USS Kittyhawk. Wil received a bronze star, among other medals and commendations. After the Navy, Wil received a calling from God and he entered Boston University Theology Department. He served as a very successful minister in several United Methodist Churches throughout the area for 31 years. Wil is survived in addition to his wife, a son, Antonio; daughters, Connie Ledford (Roger), Julie Hudock, April Decker (Joey), Toni Hudock (Zack), and Amanda Hammer; step sons, Richard Matysik (Amanda) and Joe Matysik; siblings Bonita (Boop) LaCombe (Wally), Sandy Bidwell (Jeff), Butch Chapin (Jesi), Bob Chapin (Ben), Jim Chapin, Marsha (Sis)/Bill Yannes, and Dan Chapin; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Wil was preceded in death, in addition to his parents and grandparents, his first soulmate Joyce McCall, and his brother, John Chapin. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 20th at 11am with calling hours from 9am until the time of service in the Nicholson United Methodist Church, 64 State Street, Nicholson, Pa with Pastor John Whitehead officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation at T2T.org. On June 15th Carol Lou Oakley, loving wife and mother, passed away at the age of 91 at Allied Hospice.
Carol was born in Nicholson, PA, on April 10, 1933. She was a graduate of Nicholson High School, Nicholson, PA. She was predeceased by her parents Clark and Clara Billings Stevens, sister Betty Hayden and Mae Cooley and husband Walter M. Oakley. She is survived by 7 children. W. Steven Oakley, LuAnn (David) Palmer, Gerald Oakley, Sandra (Jeff) Baker, Penny (Fred) Wheeler, Timothy (Wendy) Oakley, Michael (Michele) Oakley, 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. A homemaker, she took care of a family of 9. She was always on the move taking their 7 children to numerous activities, including school sports (soccer, basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, track & field and archery) and boy scouts and was a girl scout leader for her daughters’ troops. She shared her deep love of the Pennsylvania countryside, birds and flowers with her children and beloved grandchildren. Always an excellent cook but her specialty was baking. Corn bread, crazy cake, blueberry crumb pie were some of the family favorites but the very best was her special cinnamon buns. A private service with family will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers donation to Susquehanna County Library. Rev. Kim E. Bode lived his life in service to God, his community and his family, which ended suddenly on June 9, 2024. Born Nov. 2nd, 1950, in Chicago IL to Carl and Geneva Bode, he felt called to the ministry early at the age of 13. He received a master’s degree from Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield IL in 1976. He served churches in Gary, IN and Munson, PA before coming to Grace Lutheran in Hop Bottom where he served for 29 years, retiring in 2019. He taught at the Lutheran Academy in Scranton for 3 years.
A man known for a love of church and family, you could often find him running a 5k, traveling with his wife, preaching from the pulpit or adventuring with his grandchildren. A donor of over 22 gallons of blood, he recognized the value of human life and did all he could to rally for it. Passionate about trains and chickens, he shared many of his joys with his family, and was always ready to help anyone with their projects, especially if it involved a chainsaw. He dearly enjoyed his time volunteering with the Hop Bottom Hose Fire Company. He is survived by his wife, Anne (Oswald) Bode, of 49 years, his 5 children: Jessica (Bode) Nordquist and husband Russell Nordquist from Rochester, NY, Lisa (Bode) Sloyer and husband Paul Sloyer from Baltimore, MD, Amanda (Bode) Burkhart and husband Nicholas Burkhart from Pittsburgh PA, Joshua Bode and wife Meghan (McHale- Rogers) Bode from Chicago, IL, and Samantha Bode from Scranton, PA. He is survived by 8 grandchildren: Rowan, Judah, Bode, Eleanor, Geneva, Henry, Carlton and Colin. He is survived by his siblings Brett Bode (Carolyn), Cathy Mangan, Kirk Bode (Barb) and Craig Bode (Mary). A viewing will be held on Friday, June 14th 5:00-8:00pm in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson, PA. An additional viewing will follow on Saturday, June 15th at 10:00am in the Grace Lutheran Church in Hop Bottom with funeral service at 11:00am; with luncheon to follow.
