Lawrence DeWolfe, 79, of Nicholson passed away Sunday, July 11, 2021 at home on the family farm. The son of Charles and Irene (Squier) DeWolfe, he leaves behind his dearly beloved wife of 57 years, Phyllis.
Lawrence shared his passion for education with so many. After graduating from Lackawanna Trail and East Stroudsburg University, he engaged in the family business of teaching, starting at age 21. He taught at Elk Lake, Easton, and then enjoyed a long career at Blue Ridge High School, determined to help students understand, realize their potential in, and even enjoy math. While Lawrence courageously battled physical challenges, he would not let those define him. Instead, he would readily admit to a lifelong case of “teachers’ disease,” an inability to stop talking. Many former students fondly note that hunting was a well-used topic to initiate a tangent. His family can recite hundreds of stories that he told over the years. At Elk Lake, he met the love of his life, Phyllis Belcher. Together, they raised three children, molded many young minds, and tended the family farm. Out of a lifelong love for animals, Lawrence served with the Pennsylvania Game Commission for sixteen years. While Lawrence had a strong affinity for the farm, hunting successes, and his teaching career, he was most proud of his family. He is survived by his children Chip (Dena Ann), Dena (Brad), and Nancy (Justin); his grandchildren Mikaela, Trystan, Malachi, Hannah, Lexie, Allison, Ally, Peyton, Michael, and Carissa; his godchild Stephany; a bonus son Mark and bonus grandchildren Megan and Emily; a sister Madeline (Tom); nieces Patty, Sandy, and Jenny; and many dear friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by a sister, Charlene. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 16 at 11:00 am at the Lake Sheridan Bible Chapel, Nicholson with Pastor Jim Wentz officiating. Friends may call beginning an hour before the service. The family wishes to thank the Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their exceptional care of Lawrence in his final days. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrence and Phyllis DeWolfe Scholarship, by mail at 270 Lake Avenue, Montrose, PA 18801 or online at http://www.community-foundation.com. Arrangements by the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson.
