Mabel I. Payne, 92, of Kingsley died Sunday evening at her home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklyn Payne. Born February 19, 1927 on the family farm in Elkdale, she is the daughter of the late Homer and Laura Snedeker Collum. She was a graduate of the Harford High School and attended the United Methodist Church in South Gibson and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Laurel Chapter 67. Mabel and her husband Frank owned and operated a dairy farm for 40 plus years. Mabel also worked at Irene’s garment factory in Nicholson. Mable was best known for her knitting and baking skills. All of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were adorned with one of her beautiful knitted sweater sets with matching blanket upon birth. No one’s hands ever went cold in the winter as grandma’s knitted gloves were sure to be part of your Christmas gift along with a jar of her homemade strawberry jam. When it came to holidays Mabel always arrived with a plate full of her homemade cookies and every flavor of pie you could imagine. She was especially adored by her great grandchildren who visited her daily to have one of her molasses cookies. There was always a batch ready for them in the cupboard. She also enjoyed watching and feeding the birds from her porch. A piece of our hearts will forever be with her. Special thanks to her main caregiver and shopping partner, granddaughter Cieara Pompey. Also to Dr. Neal Davis and staff for extraordinary care through the years. Mabel is survived by three sons; son David James Payne and his wife, Judy Mae; their children Jonathan David, Joy Lynn Payne Allen (Tim), Jenny Leigh Payne ( James Yachymiak); son, Dale Frank Payne, his wife Kim Kay, their children Kyle Lee and Trevor Lynn (Johanna); son Frank James Payne and his wife Brenda Leigh, their children Cieara Lynn Payne Pompey (Dan), Franklyn Donald (Amanda); nine great grandchildren, Nathan Jo Payne, Carter Payne Allen, James David Penny, Wyatt Levi Yachymiak, Cali Mae Yachymiak, Daniel Alfredo Pompey, Harper Leigh Pompey, Bransyn Donald Payne, and Adalynn Jean Payne. She is also survived by a sister, Belva Adams. Mabel was predeceased by a daughter, Francis Mabel; a brother, Mahlon Collum; four sisters, Alberta Huff, Hilda Ramer, Unadine Weismann and Margaret Frankenfield. A funeral service will be held Saturday, December 21 at 1pm in the South Gibson United Methodist Church. The family will receive calling hours prior to the service from 11am till 1pm. Interment will follow in the South Gibson Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the South Gibson Cemetery Association.

Delores States, 81, of Clarks Summit, died Saturday, December 14.
The family will celebrate her life at a private graveside gathering at a later date. Chester (Tom) Chilewski Jr., 72 of Susquehanna, PA passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 10, 2019.
He is predeceased by his father Chester T. Chilewski Sr., mother Stella Karp and brother Robert. He is survived by his siblings Patricia Kenia, Danny Chilewski, Jerry Chilewski, Mary Lynne Twining and Kenny Chilewski; children Stephanie and Chester Chilewski III; grandchildren Morgan Seymour, Henry Chilewski (and his mother Jamie Rodriguez-Chilewski), Ophelia Chilewski (and her mother Ashley Evans). He is also survived by his long-time companion Fernata Torch and her daughter Taylor Crampton (David Kerr). Tom was an underdog, who built and ran his company from the ground up, starting with a hammer and a chisel. He was a philosopher, poet, singer of songs and lover of life. He collected antiques of all shapes and sizes. Tom always went out of his way to support a veteran and was an avid US military history buff. He was compassionate to species of all kinds and you could find anything from a chipmunk to a black bear grazing in his front yard. A nature lover, he could be found on top of the tallest mountain, next to the tallest trees scouting his “pet deer.” Tom had many passions. When he wasn’t working on the mountain, you could find him at the baccarat table or the high limit room at Mohegan Sun. He also frequented many Karaoke nights in North Eastern PA. Tom loved to cook all hours of the day and night and loved having someone to cook for, but he also enjoyed dining out at many whole-in-the wall restaurants all around town with his love, Fernata. He always said he wanted to stop poverty in one generation. He had a heart the size of an ox and always wanted to make sure his children, family and those he loved were taken care of. The family will receive calling hours prior to the service from 10am-12pm. Peter George Hammond, 74, of Kingsley passed away at home after a long battle with cancer on December 9, 2019.
Peter was a Vietnam Veteran and after the service he was in the Teamsters for 30 years before retiring. Peter was a loving father, father-in law, brother, and grandfather. He loved the outdoors and took pleasure in spending time with his family. He always enjoyed watching his granddaughters play sports, perform in school plays and concerts. They were his joy. Peter was a kindhearted, hard working man who spent a lot of his life helping others and especially his family. Peter is survived by his son and best friend, Peter Wade Hammond and wife, Colleen of Kingsley; his granddaughters, Morgan and Michaela at home; a sister, Janet Hammond of Bloomsburg; a sister, Margaret Sowers or Berwick; and three nieces, Lisa Snyder, Susan Soga, and Marla LaFaver. He was predeceased by his mother, Patricia Rogers; father, George Hammond; and sister, Mary Machain. There will be no public services. Shirley Vosburgh, age 82, of Kingsley, died Wednesday November 27 at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore. Her husband, Wade Vosburgh, died in 2016.
Born in Factoryville, she is the daughter of the late John and Gladys Avery Rosengrant. Shirley is survived by a son, Ryan Spadine; two daughters, Cathy Vosburgh and Stacey Oakley and husband Derreck; a sister, Linda Miller; and many grand and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Tal Spadine, and brothers Wayne and Donnie Rosengrant. There will be no public services. Theresa Ann Kosik Kostick, 82, of Nicholson, PA passed away peacefully at Allied Services Hospice in Scranton, PA on November 24, 2019. Theresa was born on October 2, 1937 to John and Ida Yeselavage Kosik of Eynon, PA. She was a graduate of Archbald High School, Lackawanna Business College, and Empire Beauty School. Theresa married William Kostick of Nicholson, PA on October 18, 1958. Theresa had a talent for getting things done, whether she was working as a secretary, doing hair styling from her home, or co-managing a small business with her sister-in-law. She was an award winning retail sales associate for a major department store, as well as a baker, a cook and a receptionist for a local assisted living facility. She always gave one hundred percent in everything she did and taught her family to do the same. Throughout the years she enjoyed dancing, bowling, attending "Secret Pals," playing bingo, watching 1950’s movies, cooking, baking, and going to the casinos. Theresa is survived by her husband William and their five children – Karen Graziano, Susan Kane, Lisa Hancock, Laurie Kostick, and William John Kostick, her four sisters – Pauline Lasewicz, Joan Novitsky, Mary Colisimo and Bernadine Polovitch, her two brothers – Matthew Kosik and Thomas Kosik, 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews countrywide. Family and friends may call at the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson, PA, on Friday, November 29, 2019 from 4 pm to 7 pm. All are invited to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Nicholson, PA, on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at 11 am. Donations may be made in Theresa's name at the center. Michael Joseph Mulfino, age 72, of Hop Bottom, Pa., died in his home on Tuesday, Nov. 12. His wife is Mary Ann Mulfino and they have been married for 45 years. They lived for many years in the Philadelphia area, retiring to Hop Bottom in 2014.
Born in Springfield, Mass., he was the son of the late Howard and Mildred Mulfino. He served in the United States Army for several years receiving an honorable discharge in 1973. Michael was a graduate of St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia with a master’s degree in education. He worked with abused and neglected youth for many years at Methodist Home for Children in Philadelphia and later at the DCIU in Delaware County, Pa., serving as a behavior specialist. His passions were fast-pitch softball, traveling with his wife and developing unique approaches to learning. After retirement to Hop Bottom, he set up a non-profit corporation providing educational and recreational services to youth and senior citizens. Michael is also survived by his brothers, Robert and John Mulfino; his sister-in-law, Virginia; his nieces, Michaela and Samantha, and nephew, Robert Mulfino, and their spouses and children. A memorial Mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Church, Nicholson, Pa., on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be private. Willard Gardner Williams, age 82, of Lake Winola, Factoryville died Saturday at home.
His wife is Carol Benninger Williams. Born is West Abington, he is the son of the late Charles and Mildred Gardner Williams. He was a machinist prior to retiring and he played softball for Doc’s Bombers, loved bowling, and loved to watch car racing and college basketball. Willard is survived by two sons, Stephen Williams and Daniel Goodall- Williams; four daughters, Becky Barrett, Catherine Harvey, Brenda Craig, and Karen Gallagher; two stepchildren, Gloria Stryweski and Bill Cosner; a brother, Thomas Williams; two sisters, Becky Esola and Joann Vail; 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his three brothers, Charles, Frank, and Richard. A viewing will be held from 4-7pm on Tuesday in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson. Blair Patton Richards, son of the late William A. Richards and Dorothy Blair Kellow Richards was born on July 18, 1940 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He died on Monday October 28, 2019 at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. He had resided in Ponca City, Oklahoma since 2007.
He is survived by his Son, Dr. Troy A. Richards and his wife, Heidi, and their daughters, Emily and Chloe of Bossier City, Louisiana. Additionally, he is survived by his cousin, Catherine Phillips Deter and husband, Daniel of Albuquerque, NM; niece Karen Richards Rees and husband and daughters and son of Ft Wayne, IN and nephew Kevin Richards and wife, Kari and their sons and daughter of Ft Wayne, IN. Also surviving are; cousins Darlene Rosenkrans Copeland of Sayer, PA, Gordon Rosenkrans of York, PA and sons, Rebecca Rosenkrans Murray of Honesdale, PA and sons. He was preceded in death by his parents, William A. and Dorothy Kellow Richards; his younger brother, William A. Richards; Maternal Grandparents, Nicholas A. and Irene S. Kellow and his Paternal Grandparents, William A. and Sinah Phillips Richards. Blair is also survived by his longtime caregiver, Thomas N. Fredrick of Ponca City, Oklahoma and his mother, Sandra Fredrick of Tonkawa, OK. He is grateful for all their help over the years he lived in Ponca City. In addition he is survived by many of his international exchange student "sons" including Espen Kolderup of Norway, Ole Jacob Einang of Norway, Fredrik Ohlen of Sweden, Per Ohlen of Sweden, Dion Guilbjerg of Denmark, Mario Saddy of Brazil, Gakuto Nakamura of Japan, Okato Nakamura of Japan, along with many other international students who spent time in his home including Pierre Antoin Fayol of France, Freider Borgmeier of Germany, Jari Vikström of Finland, plus many others. Blair graduated from John Marshall Elementary School and Central High School both in Scranton, PA. He then went to Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and in Religion. He went on to Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia where he received his Master’s in Christian Education. He served as the Director of Christian Education at Martha Brown Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia before moving to serve in that position at the Scottsdale United Methodist Church in Scottsdale, Arizona. From there he served as the Director of Christian Education at First United Methodist Church in San Pedro, California. He then took the position of Supervisor of the Quincy United Methodist Children's Home in Quincy, Pennsylvania. His next position was Diaconal Minister at St Luke United Methodist Church in Columbus, Georgia for almost 10 years. He held the same position at the First United Methodist Church in Pensacola, Florida for 3 1/2 years before moving to his last position as Diaconal Minister of Education/Program at First United Methodist Church in Panama City, Florida for almost 13 years. Declining health problems led to his early retirement and a move back to northeastern Pennsylvania to live closer to his parents who lived in the Factoryville, PA area. While living in the country outside of Nicholson, PA he enjoyed living on 110 acres of forests and meadows with lots of wildlife of all kinds. After his parent’s deaths he moved to Texarkana, TX to live for about 11 months before moving to Edmond, Oklahoma to live with his son and his family. He finally moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma to be near where his son had his Radiation Oncology Office. He enjoyed living in a hundred-year-old Victorian Home. Blair traveled extensively over the years leading groups on tours of Europe, leading mission teams to Mexico, Jamaica, Haiti, Brazil. a team to Charleston, SC after a hurricane as well as a month-long trip to many of the Caribbean Islands to locate projects for mission teams for the United Methodist Church Volunteers in Missions Program in the southeastern US. His longest international trip was 5 weeks to visit former exchange students and their families in Finland, Sweden, and Norway. Blair's world was enriched by the many friends he made in the churches where he worked and all the international friends he made over the years. His family was always important to him and spend a great deal of time with them over the years. A brief graveside service will be held at the Dunmore Cemetery in Dunmore, Pennsylvania on Saturday November 9, 2019 at 10:30am. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State Street, Nicholson. William Robert Ross, 58, of Clarks Summit, died Thursday at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre. His wife is the former Pamela Ann White and they have been married for 29 years.
Born in Susquehanna, he was the son of the late Wilbur and Doris Tyler Ross. He served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and was a member of the Clarks Summit VFW Post 7069. He is survived by a son, Robert; two brothers, Larry and Steven; and three sisters, Edna, Terri and Jeannie. He was predeceased by a son, Robert Bryan Ross. Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Charles H. Litwin Funeral Home, 91 State St., Nicholson. Interment will be held in the Sandy Bank Cemetery, Greenfield Twp. A viewing will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. until service time. Donations may be made to the family. |
